I have been writing about my travels abroad since I begin this blog. I'm a big advocater for travel as far as you could, while you can. While I do love the feeling of being in foreign lands every now and then, I have to do my beautiful home country some justice. If you don't know it yet, I'm born and raised in Malaysia and babe, we are home to some of the most beautiful islands in the world!
If you're craving a tropical getaway, Malaysia is home to some of the most stunning islands in Southeast Asia. Having been to some of them, I thought of sharing what I love about each of them and I'd like to kick this edition off with my personal favourite, Langkawi.
Langkawi: Where Nature Meets Convenience

Nicknamed the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi is an island paradise that perfectly balances nature and modern amenities. An archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, is a tropical paradise known for its breathtaking landscapes, lush rainforests, and pristine beaches, Langkawi seamlessly blends natural beauty with modern comforts, making it an ideal getaway for travelers of all kinds. Personally, I'm more of a leisure traveller a.k.a I'm the type of person you'll see lying horizontal on a beach mat instead of getting up at 5am going hiking (nothing's wrong with that - just don't count me in for one of those lol).
And this is why Langkawi is perfect for me. In just an hour of flying from Kuala Lumpur, I can bask in the salty breeze, grab some cheap gin and tonic from the duty-free store, stop by at a local spa for a quick shoulder massage, and most importantly - enjoying some scrumptious seafood to end the night.
How to Get Around
You could either rent a car/motorcycle or book a Grab car. Car rental counters are available at the airport as well as around the island, especially in Cenang area. If you're from abroad, it's useful to install Grab app to get around if you'd like to book a Grab car.
Beautiful Beaches & Places to Eat
For beach lovers, Cenang Beach is the go-to spot for families with its vibrant atmosphere, beachfront restaurants and cafés, souvenir and duty-free stores and thrilling water sports. I'd enjoy evening strolls in this area, with plenty of seafood restaurants options for dinner and getting a drink or two at Kalut Bar while enjoying the fire show.

If you don't mind a bit of walking, not too far away from Cenang is Tengah Beach - where you can find the famous Hidden Langkawi (well not so hidden now is it). I'd personally go this beachfront restaurant and bar for sunset but won't rely too much on this place for service - at least that was my experience when I was there couple of years ago. But don't let me cloud your judgment, they may have improved their customer service by now - I really hope so, because that would be such a waste for a stunning spot to be honest.

If you're looking for something more secluded, Tanjung Rhu Beach offers crystal-clear waters and powdery white sand, perfect for a peaceful escape. This one is my personal favourite and I'll always make sure I'll pay it a visit everytime I'm back in the island. It's a bit of a drive from town, around 30 minutes drive from Langkawi International Airport. Nearby, I'd recommend some fish and chips at Scarborough Fish & Chips Restaurant. It's a humble looking seaside restaurant, perfect for families with kids who want to have the little ones to play by the beach while waiting for your lunch to be prepared.
The Legend of Mahsuri
Apart from beautiful beaches and lush greenery, Langkawi is also famous for its tragic legend of Mahsuri - a beautiful woman falsely accused of adultery and sentenced to death in the 18th century. As she was executed, it is said that white blood flowed from her wounds, proving her innocence. Before she died, she cursed Langkawi to endure seven generations of misfortune. Many locals believe that the island only flourished again after the curse lifted.
You can visit Makam Mahsuri (Mahsuri’s Tomb) to learn more about this legend and explore the museum dedicated to her story. There is also a nice lunch spot nearby Kota Mahsuri called Nasi Dagang Pak Malau if you'd like to enjoy some nasi dagang with a beautiful view of a paddy field. I must warn you, it can be quite hot in the afternoon here but hey, you can go for a dip right after that.
Oh did I say Langkawi is also a duty-free island? If you love chocolate and booze (me, obviously) - it's easy to fall in love with this island. If you prefer an island with ease of travel, modern comforts, and a variety of activities, Langkawi is your best bet.
